About Dorothy

While our home is in Missoula, Montana, my husband Greg and I love spending time in Hawai’i, especially on beautiful Kaua’I, our favorite island.  My main career has been writing science and nature books for young readers, but I also love teaching, especially helping writers put aside their internal critic and write freely from their hearts and spirits.  Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to help free writers creativity in workshops and classes at the Yellowstone Institute in Yellowstone National Park and the Osher Foundation MOLLI program at the University of Montana, Missoula, for several years and at venues in Hawai’i including the Waimea Arts Council and the Volcano Art Center on the Big Island, and the Island School here on Kaua’i. You can learn more about me and my books at www.DorothyHinshawPatent.com

Why take this workshop?

Most writers struggle at times with our ‘internal critic’ who whispers nasty little messages in our ears such as ‘What makes you think you can write?’ or ‘Why are you even trying this—you know you’ll fail!’  In my classes on the mainland I tell writers to send their critics far away to Hawai'i. But since we're on Kaua'i, let's just ship them off to Alaska and get busy writing!

Once we’ve put our words to paper, the next challenge is how to hone it to make it better—smooth out the rough spots, improve the verbal imagery, tighten the text to heighten its impact.   Our work together and my handout and tips provide the ammunition for you to edit effectively.
